Department of Sociology

Since its foundation in 1976, Sociology Department of Sofia University is a leader in the university education of Sociology in Bulgaria. There is one BA program, two MA programs and one PhD program.

The education received at the BA program of Sociology can guarantee the acquisition of adequate knowledge and qualifications that could help the students in their career path as sociologists and researchers in sociological, marketing, PR and advertising agencies, high schools and universities, media, public institutions, political parties, NGOs.

Apart from the obligatory disciplines, the students can also choose from variety of elective courses. The education of Sociology includes research practices: real participation in research fieldwork and internships in different institutions/organizations. We work on research projects open for participation of students in various degrees and courses. The Department also publishes an Annual where the students can participate with their own papers.

General information

The qualification characteristics are in line with the goals of the degree in the specialty, namely to obtain basic – theoretical and empirical – sociological knowledge and practical skills for doing sociological research.

Bachelor degree graduates must have a knowledge of the basic sociological paradigms and contemporary sociological theories, the theory and organization of the sociological research, the most important qualitative and quantitative sociological methods, basic statistical knowledge and skills. Their serious theoretical background forms analytical mindset for identifying and understanding social and sociological problems, leads to professional implementation of different types of sociological studies and informed elaboration of public policies in the social sphere, labor market and management. Students have at least one research practice, as well as training in a relevant for their professional realization institution. Graduates of the bachelor degree obtain the Bachelor in Sociology qualification

Career opportunities

Professional qualification of students who graduated as BA in Sociology, corresponds to occupation/profession “Sociologist” according to the current official List of positions in the national classification of occupations and positions in Bulgaria, and enables them to work in: sociological, marketing, PR and advertising agencies, in academic institutions, in the media, the state and local authorities, in consulting firms, political parties, the non-governmental sector, in business organizations, including research departments in banks.

The students who have successfully passed all exams of the group of courses for teaching competency obtain the professional qualification “Bachelor in Sociology and а teacher of psychology and philosophical disciplines in secondary schools.” They could also have a career as a teacher of the above subjects in secondary schools.
