Since its foundation in 1976, Sociology Department of Sofia University is a leader in the university education of Sociology in Bulgaria. There is one BA program, two MA programs and one PhD program.
The education obtained at the BA program of Sociology can guarantee the acquisition of adequate knowledge and qualifications that could help the students in their career path as sociologists and researchers in sociological, marketing, PR and advertising agencies, high schools and universities, media, public institutions, political parties, NGOs.
Apart from the obligatory disciplines, the students can also choose from variety of elective courses. The education of Sociology includes research practices: real participation in research fieldwork and internships in different institutions/organizations. We work on research projects open for participation of students in various degrees and courses. The Department also publishes an Annual where the students can participate with their own papers.
PhD Programme
The doctoral program in Sociology gives the opportunity for academic or applied empirical research in different research topics related to significant social or socio-historical problems. The candidates choose by themselves the topic of the dissertation study and makes a project for its presentation. The candidates who successfully pass the application procedure will get funding in the form of scholarship (for full-time education students that are EU citizens). The study can be conducted in a period of 3 years for full-time students (and 4 years for part-time students). The doctoral program of the Department is held in Bulgarian.
