Theoretical Phenomenology Today

ABSTRACT
Contemporary theoretical phenomenology, especially in the French-speaking tradition since the 1960s, conceives phenomena not as fixed givens but as dynamic processes of phenomenalization. Rather than merely describing experience, it investigates the conditions under which appearance and sense first emerge.
Its main methodological tools are phenomenological „construction“ and „contraction“. Construction reconstructs the genesis of sense beyond descriptive phenomenology, while contraction designates the pre-reflective and affective dimension that first binds subjectivity to the world. In this way, it connects Henry’s self-affection, Richir’s affective condensation, and Kant’s account of synthesis.
This framework avoids both naive realism and subjectivism. Phenomena are understood as emerging through an interplay of appearance and concealment within a transcendental field of sense-formation. Contemporary theoretical phenomenology thus develops a dynamic account of the original relation between consciousness and world, in which epistemological and ontological dimensions are inseparable.
